Having your first baby is a life-changing milestone for any new mother. It offers a new change of pace for soon-to-be mothers preparing for their baby’s arrival and for people deciding if they’re ready to embrace parenthood. I know you might be feeling many things, but you don’t need to worry.

Sometimes, you might find yourself dreaming about the day you become a mother months before it happens. You might already be pregnant, or you might have dreams out of the blue at the weirdest times and places. At times, these dreams may have clarity, while other times they don’t.

I had a really vivid dream I gave birth to a large baby in a bathroom and now my entire day so far has been little moments of panic that I “forgot my baby”. thank you brain. I didn’t have enough anxiety. don’t be shy, add some more!
— h (@halsey) September 24, 2020

Several experts, such as Lauri Loewenberg (Dream Expert to the Stars) say these dreams represent new goals or a new start in life.

From one mother to another, I’m here to tell you that dreaming about birth is an everyday thing for all of us. While the circumstances of how often they occur may differ from person to person, there are meanings behind them. Once you understand these unsettling dreams, you might find that they don’t happen as often.

Meanings Behind Birth Dreams

Dreams are so abstract that we might not understand what we see or feel in our subconscious. Even if you aren’t pregnant, you can still dream about giving birth. The impact we feel from these dreams may differ from person to person, but they may share similar symbolism or meaning.

Thinking About New Life Changes

One possible meaning behind birth dreams circles back to an expecting mother having new responsibilities or changes in your life. Sometimes, these feelings of change are positive, while some might feel negative pressure. If you’re worried about this experience, you may be more prone to having nightmares about the fear of childbirth or having pregnancy complications.

New mothers who worry about their new responsibility as a parent might manifest in dreams where they forget or misplace their babies.

If you’re not pregnant, you can still experience these dreams if you’re experiencing new events in your life, such as a new career path, relationship, or interest.

Dreaming About How Well Your Birth Goes

If you dream about having a difficult birth, you might be facing internal conflict about achieving your goals. Having a baby might take time away from your other interests or goals, so you may need to find a balance to keep yourself from becoming overwhelmed. On the opposite end, dreaming about an easy birth might be a sign of success and happiness.

Concern About Your Baby’s Health

If you happen to have dreams about giving birth to an animal or monster, you might be fearful of your baby’s health. I know it’s easy for mothers to worry about their kids’ health and well-being — I do it all the time! But these dreams can also indicate that you have fears about your life changing as you become a parent.

If you’re stressing about your baby’s health (or someone else you care for, if you’re not pregnant or a mama yet) and are in a negative state of mind, you’re more likely to dream about them crying. If not, you might have control or satisfaction in your life, and dream about your baby being happy to see you.

Dreams Related to Your Body’s Changes

Some of the dreams you have may also correlate with how your body changes during your pregnancy. For example, if you have dreams related to water, you might be aware of your body’s amniotic fluid growth and the connection to your womb. Your body’s increased hormone production can also play a role in the dreams you have.

Dreaming About Birth While Pregnant

This one might not be so strange: dreaming about giving birth while you’re pregnant is actually pretty normal. Here are a few causes for these types of birth dreams.

Hormone Production

Typically, your body will produce greater levels of certain hormones during pregnancy, including hCG, hPL, estrogen, and progesterone. As your hormones rage, you’re more prone to experiencing impacts on your emotional and cognitive function. The more extreme these levels are, the more likely you’ll experience dreaming about birth.

Depending on which trimester you are during your pregnancy, you might experience these physical, emotional, and psychological effects from your hormones and feel drained.

If you’re feeling nervous from a dream about your future children, it might be a sign that your body’s hormones are increasing your stress levels.

Stress and Anxiety

Becoming a mom puts a lot of pressure on many people and could affect how they process and think about the future. Pregnancy is a stressful time for some and affects their state of being. Many people may cope with their anxiety better than others but are still prone to having these dreams.

Anxiety may branch from your feelings about your maternal responsibility. These dreams might develop into nightmares about stuff happening to you or your baby and are quite common for pregnant and postpartum mothers.

Some people feel that their dreams might predict the future, but in most cases, I think it’s related to stress interfering with your logical thinking. When I was having my first kid, my stress made me have nightmares about being stuck in a pit full of kids.

Sleep Pattern Disruptions

Another possible cause of your dreams about birth is the disruption of your sleep patterns. As your body goes through changes before giving birth, it might function in unpredictable ways. While you may find yourself getting more sleep during your pregnancy, you may feel less pleasant when you do because of the taxing exhaustion you have throughout the day.

Examples of sleep pattern changes include sleeping at different time intervals, being unable to sleep, and waking up throughout the night to vomit or urinate. If you experience any of these, it will affect your REM and how often you dream.

Who Should I Reach Out To If My Dreams Get Too Extreme?

As you experience dreaming about birth, you might find it challenging trying to cope with them. You can seek out several outlets if you feel that these vivid dreams might affect your well-being. I recommend talking to a family member, friend, partner, or therapist if you feel overwhelmed about the intensity of your birth dreams.

If you continue having issues sleeping, try contacting your doctor for a solution that benefits you and your family (and any baby on board). They might have suggestions on ways to keep your sleep patterns balanced and uninterrupted.

You can also keep a dream journal to write down the dreams you can vividly remember. Reflecting on the dreams and their commonalities may offer some insight!

Dream On?

Dreaming about giving birth or just being pregnant can be unsettling if you’re not expecting It can be even more frustrating if you don’t plan to have kids or you aren’t ready for a second or subsequent pregnancy!

The good news is that pregnancy dreams don’t necessarily mean you’re pregnant — but they do indicate that there’s something in your life you need to address. Spending some time exploring your feelings can help you figure out just why you’re having these weird dreams and may even help alleviate them.

If you’ve just become or are about to be a father, first off – CONGRATULATIONS!!! This is the start of a new chapter in your life, one that comes with all kinds of milestones and other exciting experiences.

It’s more than normal to be concerned about impending fatherhood, especially the first few months. That’s why I’ve made this New Dad Survival Guide, which will help you through some of the biggest challenges and concerns when raising a newborn.

Getting Enough Sleep

Having a baby means accepting a lack of sleep, at least for a few months. Newborns spend much of their time asleep, but they can wake up in the middle of the night, needing to be cared for, especially for feedings. If you’re friends with other parents, you’ve probably heard all kinds of stories about how sleep-deprived they were.

While you won’t get a perfect night’s sleep initially, you also shouldn’t sacrifice your health and sanity. Set yourself up for success by unwinding as best you can before bedtime. Relax with a cup of tea and a book. Make sure your bedroom and your baby’s room (if sleeping in separate rooms) are clean and relaxing. Ambient sounds, such as from a white noise machine, could help your baby feel a lot more relaxed and sleep longer.

Keep their cribs uncluttered and make sure their sleepwear fits well and is comfy. Avoid doing anything too stimulating with them as the day winds down. This can help them better understand that nighttime is meant for relaxation.

It’s also better to have one rested parent than two sleep-deprived ones. Take turns with your partner, letting them snooze while you handle the unexpected wake-up calls. If they’re the one who gave birth, letting them chill is the least you can do. This can also be a great way to bond one-on-one with your baby.

Sleep deprivation is typical with a newborn, but it’s not something to take lightly. Don’t use over-the-counter medications and caffeine as a substitute for actual sleep. Get rest when you can, such as taking a nap during the day while your partner takes care of the baby. Continue eating well and keep up with healthy, fulfilling activities like reading and exercising.

The first few nights are difficult, but it gets easier with time. Eventually, you can just wake up to the sound of your baby crying like it’s an alarm clock. After about four months, you can start sleep training, teaching your baby how to fall asleep on their own. When they start sleeping through the night or at least for longer stretches, you can brim with pride and sigh with relief at the sleep you’ll catch up on.

Diaper Changes

If your baby isn’t sleeping, they’re pooping. Sometimes, they’re doing both. Like with sleep, they make this hardest on you at first. They’ll typically need changes every couple of hours, and the output can be overwhelming. However, the more you do it, the less it will faze you. Remember: it takes a real parent to change a diaper.

The first week of poop may take you by surprise. A newborn’s initial stools are meconium. These are black and resemble tar. Over time, they’ll develop more normal bowel movements. Keep in mind that the texture should be quite soft. It’s also worth knowing that babies can go days without pooping. This isn’t a big deal, necessarily. Talk to your pediatrician if their poop is bloody or an unfamiliar color, such as white or black (post-meconium).

Depending on how you’re feeding your baby, they should be having bowel movements at certain frequencies. This is at least every three days for breast-fed babies and at least every five days for formula-fed babies. Ask sooner than that if you feel the urge. It’s better to be reassured than to be left panicking in uncertainty.

You don’t have to rush to change your baby’s diaper as soon as it’s wet or dirty. To be on the safe side, you should wait a few minutes, just to make sure they’ve gotten everything out. This lets you avoid having to change them right after getting them in a clean diaper.

A used diaper is uncomfortable for a baby. Make the changing process comfortable for them by giving them a soft changing pad and handling them gently. Hold up their legs carefully as you remove their old diaper.

Wipe them gently but thoroughly and place the wipes into the diaper before taping it up and disposing of it. Apply cream after you’ve positioned them into their new diaper. Once they’re all changed, wash up and get the station set up for their next diaper change.

When changing a diaper, it’s not uncommon to be sprayed with a sudden shower. To protect you and the room, try using their old diaper as a shield. Accidents are bound to happen, though, and it’s nothing to sweat. Also, know that some messes are more than wipes can handle. Put your baby in a bath if you’re dealing with an especially tough situation.

Diaper changes are necessary and another way to bond with your baby. Talk them through the process. Even if they can’t understand what you’re saying, they should still enjoy hearing your voice. You can also just sing gently to them to help create a more relaxing environment. It’s not exactly the most fun part of being a dad, but it can still be a rewarding experience. Before you know it, you’ll have changed thousands of diapers, and they’ll be potty-trained.

Dealing with Crying

Imagine if you knew nothing but comfort. Then, you’re suddenly thrust into a world of noise, strange sights, and giant monsters. You don’t have any way to express yourself verbally. The best you can do is a high-pitched wail.

Suffice to say, when a newborn cries, there’s a reason for it. As a new dad, deciphering the cry and figuring out how to calm your baby is tough. It can feel a little like someone throwing a Rubik’s Cube and telling you to solve it with a blindfold on.

Some solutions are easy. You check their diaper, feed them, or burp them, and it’s all taken care of. Other times, they might just be fussy and need to be rocked gently. Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t figure it out right away.

Don’t worry if you can’t figure it out at all. Focus on helping your baby feel better. Give them a pacifier if that works for them, though be aware of the risks. Bring them closer to you and talk or sing to them in a soothing manner.

Movement can also help calm your baby down. A motorized swing or cradle can keep them calm while giving you a break. Be careful about not letting them fall asleep inside these devices, however. This can lead to them needing movement to fall asleep. Taking them for a car ride can also work wonders. This also helps you get out of the confines of your home.

A crying newborn longs for the comfort and familiarity of the womb. You can replicate this by playing white noise sounds, including running the vacuum cleaner. Some bassinets replicate the feeling of being safe inside the womb. Over time, with your love and patience, they can see that the real world isn’t all that scary, especially not with you around.

Managing Stress/Mood

When someone asks you about fatherhood, you might respond with something like, “It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” However, the feelings can be complicated. Even if you’re beaming with joy at your creation and spending time with them, it’s very easy to feel stressed. You’ll be juggling multiple balls at once between taking care of your baby, going to work, and maintaining your relationship with your partner.

Stress doesn’t go away by ignoring it or covering it up with unhealthy activities, like drinking. If you need some time to yourself, don’t keep it to yourself. Talk to your partner about it and find ways to address it while also being there for your baby. Just because you’re stressed, it doesn’t mean you can shirk your parental responsibilities.

Having a baby can teach you to rethink your priorities. You can only focus on so many things in one day. Given the choice, why would you doom-scroll through social media when you could concentrate on getting to know your adorable baby better? By letting go of stressors, you can reduce their influence over you.

Sometimes, it’s a lot more complicated than just needing to reduce distractions. Postpartum depression can affect fathers as well as mothers. Be sure to share any prolonged negative feelings you’ve been experiencing. As a father, you need to be there for your child. For that to be possible, you also need to be there for yourself.

Bonding

Every moment you have with your baby is a time to bond. Embrace this, and things can be a lot more special. You can also help them to develop a stronger trust in you. Whenever you can, find ways to extend your bond with your baby.

Talk to them often and mix it up. Tell them about your day in a silly voice. This can also help you shake off some of the chaos of the day. Plus, you’ll help them to form their language skills.

Physical contact is another important form of bonding. Skin-to-skin touching is important for fathers as well as mothers. It can help relegate your baby’s heartbeat and help them sleep better.

It can also make you a lot more relaxed, able to attend to your baby more easily. Have your baby lay on your chest in just a diaper with your shirt off. Feel the rise and fall of your stomach as you breathe in and out. Notice how your baby responds and see how good it feels for you.

Don’t despair if you don’t feel a connection right away. Some new dads feel instantly attached to their little ones, but others need more time. You’re getting to know your baby, but they’re getting to know the world as well as you. Together, you can learn how to make it through this crazy but rewarding new experience.

Conclusion

Being a new dad teaches you a lot about yourself in a fairly short timespan. There will be hiccups and other slip-ups, but these are easy to recover from. Focus on keeping your baby safe and attended-to.

Remember that through it all, you’re watching them grow up and helping them along the way. Savor these moments and the different milestones they meet. They really do grow up so fast, and the best way to slow it down is by being an active presence in their lives from the very start.

Every hour, over 14,000 babies are born. While no two children are precisely the same, they all have one thing in common: a name.

Let’s face it; choosing a middle name for your baby is a significant milestone in the baby’s life, even if you are not a Royal Family member. Most of the research, brainstorming, opinion-gathering, hand-wringing, focuses on the first name. However, middle names are equally important and sometimes more challenging to select.

It is crucial to deliberate about your intention when selecting a middle name. Is it to honor your culture or family member? Or do you simply want a name that rhymes well with the first and last name?

No matter the reason, we have come up with a few factors you can keep in mind before making the final decision.

What If You Cannot Settle on a Middle Name?

If settling on a middle name is hard for one parent, both parents agreeing on a name might prove more challenging. To assist you, we have compiled some of the challenges you might experience in your search for the right name, plus some practical solutions.

Things To Consider When Selecting Your Baby’s Middle Name

It can come as a disappointment if you have grown up wishing to bestow a particular name to your child, only for your spouse to reject it out of hand. There are cases where one spouse is relentless in giving your child a celebrity name while the other cannot stand the character.

To avoid this, here are a few factors to assist you in finding an appropriate name:

Factor One: Family Connection

Depending on where you come from, some people have recurring middle names in their families. If this is you, it is advisable to talk to your parents or relatives to inquire about the right middle name to give to your child.

In such scenarios, middle names tend to break some standard baby-naming practices, therefore do not worry about giving your boys different middle names from girls.

Factor Two: Honouring a Family Member

Perhaps, you would like to show respect to one of your parents or someone who means a lot to you by using their first name as your baby’s middle name.

Whether it is your favorite uncle or late grandmother, this is an excellent way of maintaining a family name tradition without having to name your child “James IX.”

If you and your spouse cannot decide between your mother’s and his great grandmother’s name, you could use both. A growing number of parents are settling to bequeath two middle names to their children — one from each side of the family.

Factor Three: Family Tradition

Your cultural background can be a great source of inspiration. Some families have an existing naming culture where all the firstborns have a designated middle name.

If you or your spouse were born on a different continent, you could turn to family traditions for naming options.

On the other hand, most people are resulting in giving their children more than two middle names. This is attributed to our exposure to the British system and royals for decades. British royals do this as a way to honor two people at once.

Factor Four: The Name Is Meaningful To You

Maybe you conceived your child in Milan during your Honeymoon, or you met your spouse in Kenya. Venue names that have a significant meaning to your life can make great middle names.

You might also have a special connection with a movie personality, musician, or any ambiguous character that only you and your spouse understands.

Factor Five: Find Common Ground

One way of avoiding disputing over a name is coming up with a list of possibilities before going into labor. Have a column for boys and another for girls. Put spaces for crosses or ticks next to each name.

Go through the list, ticking your likes, and crossing your dislikes. Your spouse should also do the same for both of you to come up with a summary. During your pregnancy, refer to the list often as your feelings towards a name might change.

Factor Six: Name Generator

If you still need more inspiration, you can opt to use a baby name generator to help you brainstorm. These online tools can also come in handy in suggesting potential names for you.

Sometimes they include meanings to the name. If you want a name that translates to strength, courage, kindness, or beauty, you can find a beautiful name that suits the meaning you have in mind.

Things to Consider Before Settling on a Name

If you have hit a deadlock, it is advisable to take a break and do other things such as shopping as you continue looking for a name.

Before you pen your child’s birth certificate with that name, take a few moments to check on these factors:

Google the name: If there is a serial killer or an adult star out there with the same name, you might want to reconsider.

Initials: Counter check your child’s initials to confirm it does not spell anything outlandish such as COW, FML, etc.

Rhythm: You can choose to say the three names out loud to confirm they rhyme courteously. You can also decide to write them out to see whether they look nice together. For instance, if you have settled on a long first and last name, you might want to consider a short middle name.

Final Thoughts

If your baby has already come and you are yet to settle on a name, do not panic. You have about six weeks to register your baby’s name. So, you have some time to decide on a middle name, even after you meet baby.

More often than not, most infants seem to choose their own names by simply befitting them. It is a common occurrence where a parent finds themselves pondering, “ She looks like Victoria” or “He is just a Peter.”

If in doubt, you can always opt for a name with a nickname already attached to it. Also, you can settle for a middle name that you can shorten.

For instance, Elizabeth can be Liz, Libby, Beth, Liza, Bess, or Betty, and Edward can be Ted, Eddie, Teddy, or Ed. By doing this, you can avail yourself a few options when deciding what to call your baby in everyday life.

What’s more adorable than watching a rugrat marvel at the sight of cascading bubbles? I’ll tell you. It’s a mom watching that rugrat. And I can up the ante on the bubble scenario.

I started with traditional wand-blowing bubbles. The tradition is a ton of fun, but let’s face it, an automatic bubble machine is a much-appreciated upgrade. That’s why I’m a big advocate for the best bubble machines for little ones.

Mama’s Choice: Kidzlane Bubble Machine

Its kid-friendly dolphin design makes it perfect not just for kids of appropriate age, but it’s a perfect choice for either a boy or girl. It makes for Mama’s Choice because I’ve yet to see a kid that wasn’t delighted with it.

No products found.

What I Love

Bright and fun design will impress all the little ones

Spits out 500 bubbles per minute

Quiet, powerful motor and 10 spinning wands

Perfect for playdates, parties, baby showers, and weddings

The Kidzlane Bubble Machine whips through 500 bubbles per minute and comes with ten spinning wands. There’s a no-tip stable base that prevents mishaps during play. Its’ fan operates quietly.

Unlike a lot of similar products made rather cheaply, this bubble machine is pretty darn sturdy. This is probably why you’re going to find it’s a tad expensive. But let me assure you, it’s worth every penny. Most bubble machines die after a few uses.

The Kidzlane is perfect for outdoor fun during events, especially birthday parties.

Best Portable: Windrio Bubble Machine

I have to be honest with you. One of my gal-friends showed up at a birthday party last year with the Windrio Bubble Machine and the kids had to make room for the teenagers and, pitifully, the parents.

No products found.

What I Love

Touch screen makes for simple operation

Can shoot bubbles over 800 square feet

Wide-angle launching

Has a half-liter reservoir

When I went looking for a machine, I looked up this one. Still went with the Kidzlane because, well, I was buying it for the little ones, not me. This was probably the most powerful and entertaining bubble machine I encountered.

This puppy pumps out 3,000 bubbles a minute. Using the oscillating function, you can cover an amazing 800 square feet. Your little ones will run around like crazy!

The Windrio Bubble Machine is a world of fun for the little ones and the teenagers, the adults, and the pets.

No products found.

Best Toddler’s: LOYO Bubble Machine

Now, if you want to talk about the best bubble machines for little ones, I’d be remiss not to include this baby. The LOYO Bubble Machine is suitable for kiddies one year and older.

No products found.

What I Love

High quality and durable bubble blower

Can fill a room with bubbles in no time

Weighs less than 10 pounds

Easy design for the little ones

This interactive toy is lightweight. Little ones can easily carry the LOYO. Plus, it shoots over 1,000 bubbles a minute of all different sizes with eight spinning bubble wands.

It comes with two bottles of solution and a small Phillips head screwdriver for installing four AA batteries (not included). There’s a simple OFF and ON switch that even a toddler will be able to operate.

No products found.

How To Choose the Best Bubble Machines

A bubble machine is going to bring plenty of joy, but like anything you put in the hands of your little ones, you want a solution that’s safe and appropriate. All bubble machines are ready to delight, but you don’t want to hand one over to any child. Here’s how to choose the best bubble machines.

One of the key benefits to consider is will the bubble machine capture the imagination. You may have to spend a little more to get that Kidzlane, but it’s a better quality machine and has a unique look the kids will love. And different kids have different imaginations. Fish or princess, try and find a product that catches your kid’s eye from the moment they see the box.

If the bubble machine comes with a wand, be sure it’s not a size little ones may choke on. And ALWAYS use a child-friendly, non-toxic mixture. This is imperative as smaller kids put things in their mouths. Tear-free formulations might be a good idea as well.

Some moms dilute the solution with a little water. You can do this without weakening the mixture. Others make their own with one cup of water, a tablespoon of glycerin, and one-quarter cup biodegradable, natural dish detergent.

And please, try to avoid turning bubble play into ‘mommy’ time. I learned early how much fun kids can have and how much they’ll remember you were a part of it. Teach them to blow and develop jaw and mouth muscles. Show them different ways to pop bubbles, two hands, finger, foot, whole hand, showing them learn physical coordination, the building blocks for throwing, catching, and other natural skills.

3 Important Factors to Consider when Choosing a Bubble Machine

Here are things to keep in mind before purchasing a bubble machine.

Get an age-appropriate product. The design of the machines isn’t just for fun. They can help with motor functions like dexterity and balance.

Younger tots might appreciate a little color and design. Bright bubble machine designs of animals or lawnmowers will attract the kids.

Make sure you know if the device is specifically an indoor or outdoor solution. Most are both.

Other Bubble Machines You May Consider

Like I said, all our little ones are unique. The best bubble machines for little ones I picked just may not meet your standards. In that case, here a few bubble machines that might make the grade.

TOLOCO Automatic Blower Portable Bubble Maker

The TOLOCO Auto Blower is a little heavy on batteries and gets its support via USB as a power source, but on its highest setting, it’ll pump out thousands of bubbles in a single minute for up to 30 minutes.

No products found.

What I Love

Nice reservoir for storing bubble solution

Has eight bubble wands

Carry handle makes for easy transport

What’s Meh

Plain design; better for older kids

Wands can’t reach the solution in the bottom

I’ve seen this bubble machine used to create ambiance at weddings, 70s throwback parties, and, once, for a romantic dinner. But, uh, of course, it’s for the little ones, right?

The TOLOCO Auto Blower is for the kid that bubbles to the max!

No products found.

Fansteck Portable Bubble Machine

The Fansteck Portable Bubble Machine comes with two blowing wands, a screwdriver, and three bottles of bubble solution. It’s lightweight and the little ones will love dancing around with it.

No products found.

What I Love

Nice output of 800 bubbles per minute, perfect for younger kiddies

Lightweight and small, making for easy transport

Comes with three bottles and two blowing bars

What’s Meh

Unfortunately, with its battery compartment at the bottom of the device, bubble solution can leak and damage the toy

The Fansteck has a delightful and funny football shape. Kids will love how easy it is to make wonderful bubbles. Use it for Christmas, birthday parties, barbecues, and even weddings.

For its durability and affordability, this one to be one of the best outdoor bubble machines.

No products found.

Gazillion Bubbles Hurricane Machine

You’ll be blowing a bubble storm in seconds. The Gazillion Bubbles Hurricane is simple to use. Pour the solution into the reservoir, hit the button, and watch ten bubble wands strut their stuff.

No products found.

What I Love

Nicely priced considering its potential

While it has a comparatively low output, the machine feels like it’s busting a gazillion bubbles

It works great in a variety of celebrations

What’s Meh

It uses a lot of bubble solution quickly

Replacing bubble solution can be hard

For hours of fun and play, you won’t find a better or more affordable machine than the Gazillion. At 500 bubbles per minute, it doesn’t have the display of other devices but the wee ones won’t notice.

Once you and the kids experience the Gazillion Hurricane Machine, you’re going to hours and days of activity. This bubble machine offers a nice return on the investment.

No products found.

Bubbletastic Bacon Blower

If you have a dog, then the Bubbletastic Bacon Blower is the best bubble machine for little ones. Believe it or don’t, this one blows bubbles that are bacon-scented!

No products found.

What I Love

Non-toxic solution safe for kids and pets

Comes packaged with four eight-ounce bubble bottles

A great time at the dog park

What’s Meh

Pricey

Best outdoors as the device leaves a sticky residue

I personally don’t know why anyone would do this (bacon bubbles?) but I can’t deny this video makes me wish I had a pooch.

Dogs do love bubbles (and bacon!) and they’re going to go manic leaping around with the kids.

No products found.

WisToyz Dino

This one’s just fun to watch. The WisToyz Dino is available in two colors and it’s robotic. Fill it up, turn it on, and watch the bubble machine roll around.

No products found.

What I Love

Dancing, music playing, eye flashing, robotic dino bubble maker (do you really need more?)

Leakage free, large capacity reservoir

Both a bubble maker and robotic toy

What’s Meh

This is a delicate device and aggressive kids may need monitoring

The dino’s mouth blows a stream of kiddy delights. And anytime it runs into something it turns around and keeps on ticking.

The WisToyz Dino has a unique design, lots of features, and really turns bubble play into a party.

No products found.

Closing Thoughts

With so many options in the market and so many of them really cheaply made, promising only short-term fun, we think this list of the best bubble machines for little ones gives all moms a great place to start. There’s a product that’ll fit any budget and spark child wonder.

MOM TIP: Just for fun, after turning the bubble machine on, give the little one a fly swatter or other safe implement. You think they’re cute watching bubbles? Get ready to shoot a lot of social media videos.

It’s 1 AM, you are finally lying down and about to drift off when you hear it – a squeak from the bassinet. The chances are that you start to think to yourself – please, please, please, go back to sleep. Unfortunately, this may not happen – and for many parents – you are sure it won’t. If you find yourself in this situation, you are likely wondering – what can you do to help keep your baby from waking up every hour throughout the night?

The sleep cycle for a baby (the entire circuit from light to deep, NREM sleep, and some REM) only lasts for approximately 60 minutes. This means, every hour, your baby enters a lighter sleep, or they may wake up briefly, making a short squawk or moan.

Unless your baby begins to wail, you should give them a few minutes to try to self-soothe while you observe on a baby monitor – there is a good chance they will go back to sleep. If you have swaddled your baby and have white noise playing, they should settle in about 30 seconds.

However, if your baby insists they need attention in the middle of the night and every hour after that, there could be something bothering them. For example, does a parent snore? Is there a lot of traffic passing by? For babies with sensitive temperaments, this can be particularly problematic. While this is true, most babies’ top wake-up-issue is hunger.

Common Reasons Your Baby Wakes Up in the Middle of the Night

Before diving into the reasons your baby may be waking up in the middle of the night, it is a good idea to learn more about what may be causing these disturbances. Sometimes, it may be discomfort, but in other cases, the issue could be a temporary sleep disruption, such as separation anxiety or teething.

Some of the reasons your baby may wake up during the night include:

Teething

Sometimes, teething can cause late-night-wake-ups. However, the waking is usually only caused by the pain of teething for the first few nights. Remember, this is a problem that can occur when your baby breaks a new tooth, starting at just three months old. While some babies can cope with these issues well, others are so bothered by the pain that their sleep is interrupted. If this happens, you can try pain relievers to prevent additional issues.

Changes in Schedule or No Sleep Schedule

While there’s no need to have every minute accounted for, babies do well with a consistent schedule. When you establish a regular routine and bedtime for your baby, they will be more likely to sleep at these times. If any significant changes occur in your regular schedule, your baby may become overtired, which leads to issues going to sleep or waking up in the middle of the night.

Sleep Regression

Some babies experience sleep regression when they are around four months old, but this doesn’t mean it can’t occur at other ages, too. If your baby has begun to wake up at night, again and again, it could be sleep regression, which means it may be necessary to engage in sleep training again.

Hunger

Hunger is one of the top reasons babies wake up at night. Feeding your baby more often may help to prevent these issues.

Steps to Take if Your Baby Wakes Up Every Hour

If your baby is waking up too often at night, there are a few steps you can take to prevent this. Keep reading to learn what those steps are.

Increase Daytime Feedings

You may be focused on sleep during the early months of life, but your baby is focused on food.

Remember, while your baby was in the womb, they ate every second of the day. This means it is no surprise they not only need but expect regular feedings – especially to sustain the fast growth that occurs during the first few months of life. In some cultures, some mothers nurse their babies 50 to 100 times a day.

To manage this high demand and get more than two hours of sleep at a time, it is a good idea to feed your baby every one and a half to two hours during the day. This will help them sleep longer at night.

Check for Noise and Lights

Some babies will wake up because of stimuli that are not very noticeable to you; however, it may be fascinating to them. This includes things like a light left on in the hall or a siren in the distance. With a white noise machine and blackout shades, you can help to reduce these distractions.

Check the Baby’s Diaper

Before putting your baby back to bed, be sure to check their diaper and make sure they are not in pain or sick. If your baby has a dirty diaper or is not feeling well, they will wake up throughout the night. Be sure to check for these things ahead of time to prevent issues through the night.

Don’t Rush in the Room

If your baby is fussing but not in serious distress, you need to resist the urge to rush in and pick them up. Instead, try a gentle pat until they calm down. However, be sure you stop patting right before they go to sleep, so they learn to go to sleep on their own. Using a pacifier may also be beneficial.

Never Assume Your Baby Is Hungry

If you have a baby who has been sleeping through the night and not eating in the middle of the night for a while, if you begin feeding them to get them to go back to sleep, it can be a hard habit to break. While this is true, if you have a baby who is younger and really does need feeding in the middle of the night, this may be the best way to get them back to bed.

Tips to Prevent Nighttime Wake-Up Calls

It doesn’t matter what has caused your little one to wake up; there are a few steps you can take to help prevent these situations in the future.

Develop a Bedtime Routine

Start getting ready for bedtime about 30 to 45 minutes before you want your baby to go to sleep. This may include a bath, infant massage, and story.

Set a relaxing mood with a noise machine and night light. Get your wipe warmer handy, in case you need to do a ninja-style diaper change in the middle of the night.

Be Boring

You should never give your baby the idea that being awake at night is exciting or fun. Dim the lights, don’t engage them and don’t change diapers – unless absolutely necessary.

Don’t Skip Naps During the Day

While it may seem like skipping naps is a smart move if your baby is waking up in the middle of the night, this tactic may backfire. While naps can counteract a sleep deficit at night, they are still necessary to maintain your routine and ensure your baby’s good health.

Give Them Plenty to Eat During the Day

Be sure your baby finishes their final feeding of the day before going to bed. If they don’t eat enough during the day, it is almost a guarantee they will wake up hungry at night. For very young babies, scheduling a dream feed may be smart right before you go to bed.

Overcoming Late Night Wake-Up Calls from Your Baby

As you can see, there are several reasons your baby may be waking up in the middle of the night. While this is true, there are also steps you can take to help ensure your little one gets the sleep they need, each and every night.

Keep in mind, the process of getting your baby to sleep through the night may take time and effort. While this is true, when you use the tips and information here, you will be able to get them smiling and on a good sleep schedule.

Let’s face it–sticking to an exercise routine can be tough for anyone. But when you’re trying to meet your fitness goals as a busy mom, it may seem downright impossible. If you barely have time to take a shower, how in the world will you find time to exercise?

I’ve got some good news for you: even if your to-do list seems never-ending, there are plenty of ways to make exercise a reality. Sure, getting your heart rate up may require more planning than it did pre-baby, but plenty of moms have found ways to stay in shape. There’s no reason you can’t, too.

Ready to find out how? Let’s dive into this guide to fitness for busy moms.

Find Your Why

Before we talk about how, let’s first discuss the why behind our exercise goals.

As moms, we face lots of demands and distractions, and we’re often under a lot of stress. It’s easy to let our own health slide with so much to do. To be successful with fitness, we have to remind ourselves why exercise is important.

Ask yourself right now what you’re hoping to achieve from exercise. Do you want to lose pregnancy weight? Perhaps you were an exercise junkie before having a baby, and you miss the adrenaline rush you get from working out. Maybe you want to keep fit so you can be a healthy, active mom for your kids.

It doesn’t matter what your motivation is, as long as you know what it is. Keeping your “why” at the forefront will help you find the motivation to exercise when you’d rather sit on the couch. Because let’s face it–we all have those days every now and again.

13 Tips on Finding Time for Exercise for Busy Moms

Now that you’ve defined your reasons for wanting to work out, you’re probably wondering how to make those workouts a reality. Here are 13 of the best ways to squeeze in some you time.

Get Up Early

You’ve probably experienced the following scenario all the time: You get home from work pumped for your evening workout, but between commitments, activities, changing diapers, and getting dinner on the table (to name just a few!), there aren’t enough hours in the day. Before you know it, it’s time for bed, and your workout gear lays untouched.

One way of getting around this problem is to get up early for your daily sweat session. I know–you’re probably already getting up early. But for many moms, exercising before everyone else has even rolled over in bed is the best way to ensure time for you.

Plus, working out before everyone else is awake means you won’t encounter any distractions or interruptions. You’ll have knocked out this critical to-do list item before your kids are up, and you’ll be energized and ready to start the day.

If getting up early is hard for you, go slow at first. Try easing into one or two half-hour sessions per week to see if this strategy is one you like and–more importantly–can maintain.

Set a Date

Thinking of workouts as dates with yourself significantly increases the probability that you’ll show up for them. The trick is to make them feel like an appointment you need to keep, which is why you should actually schedule sessions in your calendar. It’s hard to skip a workout when you’ve blocked the time for it.

This tactic is also excellent if you share a calendar with your spouse, as they can see ahead of time when you plan to work out, and they have to take care of the kids. Of course, when your partner needs their exercise time, you return the favor. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Workout with Your Kids

Who said that workouts had to be kid-free? If you truly can’t find time to sneak away from your kids, get them involved instead. There are plenty of ways to do so, depending on the age of your kids.

For younger babies, babywearing workouts are an excellent way to bond with your baby and get in shape! You hold the baby on your body in some kind of carrier and do bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, and upper body exercises. The video below provides an excellent demonstration of some common babywearing exercises.

Once your little one outgrows the carrier, you can do your workouts with them. Children love to move, so including them in your workout is essentially added playtime for them. Let your little one jump on your Bosu ball or play “hop over” games with resistance bands. Not only will they love spending time with you, but they will also burn some energy.

Exercise at Work

If getting up at the crack of dawn to work out just isn’t your thing, try taking advantage of another free moment in your day: lunch. For many of us who work full-time, this is an ideal moment to sweat.

Some moms use their lunch hour to go for a run, while others attend a yoga class. You can even do some bodyweight exercises if you have an office with a door (and feel comfortable actually working out in the office). Or take advantage of your lunch hour to go for a vigorous walk. What you do is up to you–the sky’s the limit.

One critical piece of advice if you plan to work out at lunch is to make sure you’re prepared so you can freshen up after your session. A change of clothes is a must, and you should also keep items like deodorant, dry shampoo, a towel, and makeup close at hand.

Play at the Jungle Gym

Are you going with your kid to the playground? Take advantage of their playtime to sneak in a workout at the jungle gym. Not only can you get some quality exercise time in, but your kids will also love that mommy is “playing” with them at the park.

Try doing ab tucks on a swing, box jumps on an elevated step or platform, or tricep dips. Are the monkey bars free? Swing from one end to the other, or use them to work on your pull-up. (If you aren’t quite there yet, a long resistance band can provide the assistance you need.) There are plenty of playground workout hacks–use your imagination!

Break It Up

Sometimes, an hour-long uninterrupted workout session is easier said than done. Try letting go of the all-or-nothing mentality, and complete a few shorter workouts throughout the day instead. The best time to do this is when your kids are busy with activities that don’t involve you.

Try doing some Pilates while your kids are eating, for example. Or complete a few rounds of planks when they’re watching their favorite TV show (who knows, they may even want to join you!) Baby sleeping? Do some light stretching and mobility work. You get the idea.

And don’t think that just because a workout is short that it’s less effective. HIIT training, or high-intensity interval training, is an excellent example. These sessions last anywhere from five to twenty minutes, and they get your heart rate up fast for a super-effective workout. HIIT is perfect for moms looking for the most bang for their buck.

Make Your Commute Active

If you live close enough to walk or bike to work, leave your car at home. Even if it’s just fifteen or twenty minutes, making your commute active adds up.

Similarly, if your child’s school is within walking distance, try taking the stroller and picking them up instead of driving. Better yet, have them ride their bike while you follow along for a family walk!

Sign up for a Class

Fact: if your workout is a group class that you’ve spent your hard-earned money on, you’re more likely to show up. And the best part about classes is that there’s something for everyone. You can sign up for Zumba, BodyPump, Pilates, or CrossFit, to name just a few. Some classes even offer free child care while you’re working out.

You may also want to take your kid with you to work out. There are plenty of mommy-and-me classes, such as dance, swimming, gymnastics, and fitness, that both of you will love.

Be Honest About Your Phone Habits

Sure, it may seem like you don’t have any free time, but have you taken an honest look at your day?

Chances are you spend more time than you realize scrolling sites like Instagram or Pinterest. Your phone’s screen time feature can help you come to grips with how much time you spend on your phone. You’ll likely find an extra ten or twenty minutes you could use for exercise instead.

Find Your Support

The right support system can make all the difference when it comes to sticking to a fitness routine–and the great thing is that support systems are not one-size-fits-all.

Some of us like to surround ourselves with lots of like-minded fitness-enthusiast moms to stay on track. Support groups can help you stay accountable and are a great place to meet new people. Try searching for in-person mom groups or online communities, which are both excellent ways to share your fitness goals with others.

Other moms prefer to find a workout buddy to keep them on track. Whatever your support system looks like, the important thing is that it works for you.

Have Grace with Yourself

The truth is that even before kids, it was all too easy for life to get in the way of your workouts. As a new mom, this statement is truer than ever.

From sleep deprivation to dealing with sick kids, doctors’ appointments and lousy days at work, sometimes you have to put your workout on the back burner–and that’s okay. Don’t beat yourself up if you have to skip a workout. As long as it’s not a regular habit, there’s no shame in missing a day here and there.

Eat Healthily

It’s no secret that what you eat is a fundamental part of fitness, and your diet becomes even more critical if you’re breastfeeding. You want to fuel your body with mostly healthy, whole-grain foods. Try to choose foods from the following food groups as much as possible:

Lean proteins (white meat chicken, turkey, salmon, cod)

Legumes (lentils, chickpeas, beans)

Vegetables (especially leafy green vegetables)

Fruit

Breads, cereals, and grains

Make sure to stay hydrated, get enough calories, and eat between three to six meals per day.

Prioritize Your Well-being

It’s all too easy to get bogged down in the challenging moments of motherhood and let fitness go by the wayside. I encourage you to change the way you think about fitness. Reframing it as a priority instead of a luxury can make all the difference. Remember, the more you take care of yourself, the better you’ll be able to take care of your little one.

The bottom line? Make your well-being a priority, and everyone around you will benefit, too.

A nipple shield or nipple cover is a flexible piece of silicone or rubber that fits over your nipple to create an easier latch for your baby. They’re especially helpful if your baby is premature or has a tongue tie. They’re also great if you have flat, inverted, or shy nipples.

Lansinoh Nipple Shields

Mama’s Choice: Best Overall

Finding the right nipple shield is a very personal decision, but with over 5000 exceptional reviews, there’s no doubt Lansinoh’s nipple shields are a high-quality option. These thin and flexible silicone covers come in a pack of two, are available in multiple sizes, and arrive with a hygienic storage case.

No products found.

What I Love

Rounded, natural shape for effective use

Comes in a set of two, where several brands only sell one

Carrying case allows for hygienic travel

Maximal skin-to-skin contact thanks to cut-out design

Lansinoh nipple shields help with a broad range of breastfeeding challenges. If your baby is premature or has a tongue tie, these shields can work wonders. They’re also fantastic for moms with inverted or flat nipples and for those who experience overactive let-down.

Ideally, nipple shields aren’t for long-term use, but it can be challenging to stop using them once your baby comes to expect one. Lansinoh’s cut-out design allows your baby to smell and feel the maximum amount of your skin, making it easier to switch to a bare breast later on.

Beyond all of that, Lansinoh is a trusted brand that provides incredible value. I love that these shields come in a pack of two with a carrying case for easy travel and storage.

Medela Contact Nipple Shield

Mama’s Choice: Best for Flat or Inverted Nipples

Medela is a well-respected breastfeeding brand that many doctors and lactation consultants swear by. Their contact nipple shield has a unique half-moon shaped design that’s narrow but deep, making it our top choice for flat or inverted nipples.

No products found.

What I Love

Half-moon shape maximizes skin-to-skin contact

Narrow but deep design especially helpful for flat nipples

Well-known, respected, and safe brand

Extensive range of sizes available

Many lactation consultants carry these Medela Contact Nipple Shields on them when meeting with first-time moms. That fact alone really says it all. These nipple shields help with all sorts of breastfeeding challenges, including tongue ties and premature infants.

I love these shields most, though, for inverted or flat nipples. The thin, half-moon design allows for maximum skin-to-skin contact, but they’re a little deeper and more narrow than other nipple shields. So, they pull the nipple further out from the rest of the breast.

This makes them especially effective for moms whose nipples are hard to latch onto, and the skin-to-skin emphasis makes it easier to stop using them later on.

MAM Breastfeeding Nipple Shields

Mama’s Choice: Best for Small Nipples

If you have small nipples, finding a nipple shield that fits and grips can be a challenge. That’s why the MAM nipple shields are such a great option. They come in sizes as small as 17mm, and their textured surface helps adherence, even when your baby is fussy.

No products found.

What I Love

Made of light, flexible, and thin, skin-soft silicone

Textured surface allows for airflow and better adherence

Unique design helps maximize skin-to-skin contact

17 mm size ideal for women with small nipples

Comes with microwavable, sanitizing storage case

Some moms have a hard time with nipple shields that are too large. Or, if a brand makes a size small enough, the nipple shield simply won’t stay on. MAM changes the game with their smaller nipple shields that stay in place thanks to their textured surface.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CI78fHXiPBC/

The shields have a cut out on top and bottom to maximize skin-to-skin contact. Plus, they come with a microwavable storage case for easy sanitization. Other brands require boiling water to sanitize nipple covers. Having a microwavable storage case is lifesaving for busy mothers!

No products found.

How to Choose the Best Nipple Shields

Nipple shields aren’t right for every mom and infant. It’s always best practice to speak to a lactation consultant before purchasing or using one. The best nipple shields will stay on, provide maximal skin-to-skin contact, and will create a comfortable place for your baby to latch on.

Purchasing the right size is essential when buying a nipple cover. Your lactation consultant will be able to help you measure and purchase the correct size. The shield should cover your areola, but again, it should encourage skin-to-skin contact as much as possible.

Try to remember, too, that nipple shields are usually short term solutions. Long term use can cause your milk supply to decrease, and weaning a baby off a nipple shield can be challenging.

That said, as the old adage goes: if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Some women use nipple shields long-term, and I certainly don’t judge them. Sore and tender nipples can make breastfeeding a nightmare. If a nipple shield helps you and your baby, don’t worry too much about using it!

3 Important Factors to Consider When Buying a Nipple Shield

If you’re considering buying a nipple shield, there are a few things to keep in mind:

How much of the breast does it cover?

Infants use scent and touch more than eyesight to find their way around. Having a nipple shield that provides maximum skin-to-skin contact can help them learn how to latch on. More skin-to-skin also encourages breast stimulation, which can lead to better milk supply.

Will the cover stay on when your baby is fussy?

Some covers have textured surfaces that help them adhere to your breast, which may be ideal when your baby is fussy. Having a nipple shield that falls off easily can be frustrating when your baby is hungry at, say, 3 am.

Will your nipple shield control overactive let-down?

It’s common for new moms to have a lot of milk and what’s known as an overactive let-down. When this happens, your baby can receive too much milk at once, and that causes them to choke. Many nipple shields have a pacifier tip that helps control milk flow.

Other Nipple Shields to Consider

Haakaa Nipple Shield

The Haakaa Nipple Shield creates a little space between your nipple and where your baby latches on. This space prevents painful bites and helps control milk flow.

No products found.

What I Love

Ridged edge helps this nipple shield stay in place

Orthodontic shape encourages sucking without biting

Shape also prevents choking by encouraging variable flow

What’s Meh

Shape may also cause excess gas in some infants

Thicker plastic may be difficult for baby to suck

Every mom and every infant is different, and many find success with the Haakaa Nipple Shield. Its design is incredibly unique because it creates space between your natural nipple and the shield.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CIMlX3Fgv0N/

This space comes with pros and cons. An infant may swallow excess air, which leads to painful gas later on. However, the shape also discourages biting, which may be vital if your nipples are tender and sore. And, this shield allows for variable milk flow, eliminating any risk of choking on too much milk at once.

No products found.

Mamivac Conical Nipple Shield

The Mamivac Conical Nipple Shield is made with super-thin material with short-term use in mind. It’s fantastic for those with larger nipples, as it comes in bigger sizes than other brands.

No products found.

What I Love

Extremely thin and flexible material

Conical shape increases skin-to-skin contact

Comes in large sizes, up to 28 mm

What’s Meh

Thin material means less protection for sore or sensitive nipples

Doesn’t stay in place as well as other varieties

Many moms with larger nipples will love the Mamivac Conical Nipple Shield because it’s one of the few brands available at 28 mm. It’s thinner than most other brands as well, which may or may not be a good thing.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CGHUW54FMQZ/

Some moms find that the thin material, when wet, tends to stick to itself instead of their breasts. This means it doesn’t stay on as well. And, more delicate material means less protection for tender nipples. That said, the thin material allows for closer contact, making getting rid of the shield easier down the line.

No products found.

Yiyee Nipple Shield

The Yiyee Nipple Shield uses a triangular petal-shaped design to adhere to your breast firmly. At the same time, its spiraled pacifier helps control milk flow by mimicking the natural rhythm your baby would experience without the shield.

No products found.

What I Love

Sticks to your breast firmly and easily

Protruding, spiralized pacifier tip makes sucking easier for your baby

Works great for larger breasts

Thicker silicone provides protection for sore nipples

What’s Meh

Larger, petal-shape means less skin-to-skin contact

Thicker silicone means your baby has to suck harder

Moms with larger breasts seem to love the Yiyee nipple shield. The petal-shaped design allows for a stronger hold on your breast, but that also means less skin-to-skin contact for your baby.

It’s made with food-grade soft silicone, which makes it resilient and protective should your baby decide to bite, but it also means it’s harder for your baby to suck milk through than some thinner varieties.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61lcuVg4iJL._SL1100_.jpg

Of course, the larger and thicker design does mean you can save every last drop of milk. By leaning over when you release the shield, you’ll catch any remaining breast milk, which you can save in a bottle for another time.

No products found.

Closing Thoughts

Having a newborn is life-changing. It’s joyful but also challenging, and breastfeeding is only one piece of the pie. Many moms go into motherhood thinking that breastfeeding is a given. They may feel frustrated when nursing goes awry.

Nipple shields help with all sorts of common problems, like tongue ties or flat nipples that make latching on to the breast difficult. They’re not for everyone, and which one works for you and your baby is a personal decision.

Look for one that provides comfort for you and your infant. Buy from a brand you trust and work with your lactation consultant to get the right fit. What matters most is that you’re doing your best to nourish your infant and that in itself is an accomplishment.

Pets are an excellent addition to any family. They can bring laughter into the home and light up a tough day. These creatures seem to know us best and have an emotional connection to your every feeling.

As if that’s not enough already, pets are good for us to have around. They help lower blood pressure just by being in their presence. It’s remarkable if you stop and think about it for a moment. Some people might find it challenging to think of a person that makes them feel that calm.

If this tidbit of information doesn’t already have you wondering about more, try watching a ten-minute animal compilation on YouTube and see if that doesn’t get you laughing, smiling, and wondering maybe it’s time to get a family pet of your own.

1. Benefits of Having A Family Pet

If you never grew up with a pet, or it’s been a while since you’ve had a furry family member, there’s no better time than right now of being reminded of all the beautiful moments and memories a pet will bring to your family.

But, with all things in life, there must be a balance. So, whether you’re thinking of adopting a puppy, kitten, or perhaps you’re looking to give a senior pet a peaceful home, they’re a lot like toddlers in many ways. And often, they don’t out-grow those adorable, curious behaviors.

Pros

Patience

Compassion

Laughter

Trust

Responsibility

Cons

Toddlers for life

Healthcare is expensive, and there are no HMOs or PPOs insurance plans

They eat and play with things they shouldn’t

Pet-sitters are a must today

2. Great Family Pets

With 67% of all U. S. households with pets, dogs and cats hold the market in popularity for family pets.

Dogs

When it comes to choosing a good dog for your family, there’s a lot to consider. It’s often best for the family to make the decision together by starting with your needs, like a teacup, small, medium, large, and “super-sized.” Maybe Mom or Dad are not looking forward to managing the pet hair and dander—shed-friendly would be at the top of your list as a must-have.

Here are some things that list high on the pros and cons of owning a family dog.

Pros

Enjoyment and laughter

Comfort and security

Improved mental and physical health

Cons

Schedules matter for feeding and potty breaks

Added monthly expense: food and litter

Healthcare and dental care

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a joyful little creature that never seems to have a bad day. Possibly a result of the breed’s history with Britain’s Royal Family.

Pros

Happiness is abound

They love people and get along well with children and other animals

The fur is silky smooth and delightful to touch

Gentle and kind

Cons

Territorial

Prone to barking

The breed is known for several health issues

French Bulldog (or Frenchie)

The Frenchie is a beloved favorite in the U. S. today. The breed’s bat-like ears and compact body give them distinction from their cousins, the bulldog.

Pros

Alert and aware

Adapt to change well

Playful without being overly hyper

Cons

The dense build of the Frenchie makes the breed in-capable of swimming.

Overeating leads to obesity in the breed, so NO human food.

The Forever Favorite – The Mutt

The funny thing about mutts, or shelter pups, their personalities and quirks are unique to each of them. In many ways, there’s no denying their happiness for life and their reverence regarding their past—making them distinctly unique.

Pros

Devoted

Sociable

Sensitive

Often great with kids

Few health problems, but still, make regular annual vet visits.

Live Longer

Cons

Shedding is an unknown

No solid background

Cats

Sometimes cats get a bad reputation. But once videos began popping up all over the internet of funny things cats do there seemed to be a small hint of redemption for the furry funny little creatures.

Pros

Loving

Snuggly

Personable

Cons

Sharp nails

Anger issues

Indecisive

Abyssinian

These high energy charmers love life best while at play. Abyssinian energy demands a sibling or playmate—be it a dog or another cat breed.

Pros

Suitable for families with children over six years of age

Sociable with people

Curious to a fault

Affectionate

Cons

Curious to a fault, a strength can also dub as a weakness

High energy is not for the faint of heart

Cats can go just about anywhere

Ragdoll

As the name implies, Ragdolls are excellent with children, especially those kids who love picking up their furry-crew, carrying them from room to room.

Pros

Easily trained

Playful and docile all at the same time.

Snuggly

Cons

Vocal

Health problems can arise frequently

Heavy shedders

The Domestic Shorthair Cat

The Domestic Shorthair cat, often referred to as DSH, is an all-around family cat. DSH’s have almost a plushy-like fur that’s an absolute joy to feel and touch.

Pros

Power nappers

Playful and highly sociable

Snugglers with a mission

Cons

Nocturnal

Prone to common health problems for ant cat

Hairballs

3. Where to Get A Great Pet

There are many places you can find pets: the internet, pet shelters, humane societies, breeders, and pet stores. But future pet-parent beware of all that goes into adopting a new furry family member.

Adoptions

Adoption is an excellent option for new pet families. There are two types of shelters: non-profit and humane societies.

The common difference between the two isn’t pretty, but most of us understand humane societies are often not so compassionate. While non-profit animal shelters, like Best Friends, are often referred to as no-kill shelters or sanctuaries.

Pros

You save a life that would otherwise die needlessly

Being that pet’s forever home

Given to a good cause

Cons

Humane societies are notorious for killing needlessly

Breeders

The biggest takeaway, do your homework on every breeder you find. Irresponsible breeding often occurs when breeders look to achieve perfect features by in-breeding.

Pros

Responsible breeders often lead to healthier litters

Good breeders generally only have one male and one female

A caring, compassionate breeder will thoroughly vet new pet-parents

Cons

Irresponsible breeding

Genetic and more health problems

Breeders look at their pets as income factories

Pet Stores

Puppies and kittens in pet stores generally come from puppy mills and cat mills.

You can also consider adopting from no-kill shelters and sanctuaries that fight every day to save a life from puppy mills or cat mills.

Pros

Save a life

You get to be the forever home

Unconditional love and devotion

Cons

Originate from puppy or cat mills

Often sick and need immediate medical attention

They May have worms and in need of urgent medical care

4. Know Your Budget

Adopting and caring for a pet is initially expensive. Here’s how I’ve broken the budget down below.

Adoption Fees

Adoption fees can vary from the humane societies, non-profits animal shelters and sanctuaries, breeders, and pet stores. Here’s what you need to plan for financially on adoption day. Pet registration with your local humane society, that fee will vary depending upon where you live.

Consider having your new family member micro-chipped by the location that adopts them or by their vet.

Pet-gear

Your new fur-baby is going to need new things that belong to them. Here are a few of the top things you’ll need to pick up for your new fur-baby:

Pet bed

Toys

Bowls: one for food and one for water

Kennels, car carriers, or both

Leashes and harnesses

Pet Health

Budgeting for an annual veterinarian visit for shots and teeth cleanings are a must.

Here are a few more must-haves for your fur-baby:

Some fur-babies don’t have a lot of hair and need extra insulation—raincoats, winter coats, booties, and packs

Grooming yourself—pick up some brushes, shampoo, and conditioner

Plan on budgeting for monthly groomings

Monthly Expenses

Those monthly budgets are essential, too, so make sure you’ve built that into your monthly pet expenses.

Whether you adopt a dog or cat, perhaps both a dog and a cat, they need to eat and food for them is a monthly expense

If you decide on a cat, litter is a monthly expense

5. Pets and Your Child’s Immune System

Finnish based research, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2012, showed that under a multivariate analysis, children raised in a home with a dog were less at risk of getting sick than children that did not have a dog.

6. Furry Best-friend

Children have bad days, too, and need the emotional support of a friend. Who better than a furry best-friend to lick your face to put a smile back on a child’s face.

7. Your Child’s Self-esteem

There is evidence-based research; however, there is little understanding behind why, but children and adolescents with pet companions have better overall development. Research is ongoing.

8. Interacting With Pets Can Release Oxytocin

New research shows that when humans interact with their pets and others’ pets, there is a release of the hormone associated with bonding, called oxytocin.

9. Keeping Commitments

Fur-babies instill a sense of social responsibility in kids, to understand the value of keeping those commitments to themselves and others.

10. Can Tell Time

Have you ever noticed that your furry crew is tuned in to your daily schedule? That’s because they know they know when to expect you home every day—another big reason to keep those commitments.

11. Pet Therapy

Pet therapy is nothing new. But this kind of treatment continues to gain momentum. As recent as 2018, the National Institutes of Health partnered with Mars Corporation to fund ongoing research into animal interactions with autistic children and children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

12. Play Time Outside

91% of children with a family dog play in their backyard, then only 84% of children without a family pet. Those numbers grow further apart as children move to play outside the backyard, and even further if they walk their family pet.

13. Improved Cognitive Growth

Reading with Rover can help not only your child’s confidence but improve speed as well as beneficially alter your child’s behavior.

14. A Fearless Defender

A kid needs to have a furry-backup partner—someone who has their back as a fearless defender from threats.

15. Comfort and Cheering Up

We already know that animal interaction can help cognitive behaviors improve in children. And some research suggests that if a cat’s purr can help the animal heal faster, what effects can it have on sick people? Researchers already know owning a cat can lower your risk of heart disease.

16. Infinite Unconditional Love

What more is there to say? Unconditional love is hard to find these days in many people. So, there’s no arguing the point of sharing a household with a furry-family of your own.

Decision Day!

One thing is absolute, treat them with kindness, and you’ll have a new friend. Give them a forever home (safe, warm, and loving), and you’ll have their unconditional devoted love for life.

As a busy Mama, one of my biggest challenges is trying to juggle all of my responsibilities. It seems like there are never enough hours in the day to get EVERYTHING done. I’ve discovered that one of the best ways to save time (and money!) is to create a Weekly Family Meal Plan.

Meal Planning: Mama’s Little Helper

Having a detailed Weekly Meal Plan REALLY lightens my load:

Conscious Cooking—Instead of just throwing something together because it’s easy and quick, I put real thought into every meal and snack. I get to choose tasty and nutritious meals that go beyond tired stressed-for-time Mama standbys like frozen chicken nuggets and hot dogs.

Streamlining Shopping—No more wandering through grocery store aisles without a plan. Better yet, meal planning puts an end to ordering yet another pizza because I forgot to shop.

Managing My Money—If I pay attention to local grocery store flyers, I can plan meals around what’s on sale that week, buy in bulk, and even use coupons (before they expire!).

Reduce Cooking Time—Perhaps the best part about making a Weekly Family Meal Plan is saving a TON of prepping and cooking time.

Healthier food, more time and money, and less stress—what’s not to love?

The Secret to My Success: Apps to the Rescue

My go-to tool for finding the grocery deals near me is the Flipp app, which brings all my local supermarket flyers together in one place. You would be amazed at how much money I save by building my Weekly Family Meal Plan around what’s currently on sale.

If I am stumped about what to make and need inspiration, Yummly is my meal planning partner because it lets me search by individual ingredients or specific recipes. I can create meal plans based on my family’s preferences, and then the app automatically creates a shopping list for me. Best of all, I can order grocery delivery right from the app.

Planning Means Prep

The second secret to successful meal planning is bulk preparation. After my groceries are delivered, I set aside some time to do most of the meal prep for the week all at once.

For example, I can chop up some carrots for Sunday’s stew, slice a few up for a side dish on Wednesday, and peel some for snacks throughout the week, all at once. Or I can brown the ground beef I will need for Spaghetti Bolognese on Monday and Taco Tuesday at the same time.

In fact, because we usually have tacos EVERY Tuesday, I save a tremendous amount of time by cooking enough taco meat for several meals, portioning a meal’s worth into individual containers, and popping them into the freezer until I’m ready to use them. I do this with everything I can—meats, chicken, vegetables, soups, and herbs. If I prepare it now, in bulk, then I don’t have to do it later.

Saving money and saving time are the advantages of weekly family meal planning and bulk food preparation.

The Philosophy of Meal Planning

Every task involved in meal planning is designed to make meal preparation faster, easier, more nutritious, more cost-effective, or all of the above. If you can keep that in mind, it becomes a lot easier to stay disciplined.

Start developing good habits that will make the entire process easier. Pick one specific day of the week to plan the week’s menu and order groceries and another day to do your bulk meal preparation.

Start choosing ingredients and recipes for their cost-effectiveness, simplicity, and versatility. Look for ingredients that can be used in multiple ways, and try to pick simple recipes that don’t require a lot of prep or cooking time.

A big part of meal planning is reducing food waste, so look for ways to repurpose leftovers. As you will see in my meal plan, I am a big fan of turning tonight’s dinner into tomorrow’s lunch.

A Weekly Family Meal Plan in Action

Let’s take a look at a sample Weekly Meal Plan that I’ve used for MY family. Obviously, your family’s likes and dislikes, dietary needs, budget, and time commitments differ from ours, but you can still use my plan as inspiration to create your own.

Sunday

Breakfast

French Toast and Sausage (using leftover sourdough bread from Saturday’s dinner)

Lunch

Chicken Quesadillas (using bulk-prepared chicken breast from my freezer)

Dinner

Spaghetti with Meat Sauce (30 minutes)

Because I do most of my bulk meal prep for the week on Sundays, dinner tends to be some sort of pasta dish—simple and quick, but still nutritious and filling.

Monday

Breakfast

Breakfast Burritos (using flour tortillas from Sunday’s lunch)

Weekday mornings tend to be hectic, so I concentrate on light meals that can be on the table in just a few minutes.

Lunch

Spaghetti Grilled Cheese Sandwiches—Absolutely kiddo-approved!

Dinner

Roast Chicken and Steamed Broccoli (5 minutes prep, 90 minutes in the oven)

Roast chicken is one of the simplest and most versatile dishes on my dinner rotation. If I change even just a few ingredients, I create an entirely different meal.

Tuesday

Breakfast

Cereal with sliced bananas and milk

Lunch

Chicken and Vegetable Stir-Fry (using Monday’s leftovers)

Dinner

Crispy Tacos and Refried Beans (using bulk-prepared ground beef) (15 minutes)

Wednesday

Breakfast

English Muffin Breakfast Sandwiches

Lunch

Bean and Cheese Nachos (using leftovers from Taco Tuesday)

Dinner

Roast Pork with Apples (5 minutes prep, 6-8 hours in a slow cooker)

I am a HUGE fan of slow cookers. All I have to do is throw a few ingredients in the pot after breakfast and leave it alone until it’s time for dinner.

Thursday

Breakfast

Cereal with Berries and Milk

Lunch

Sloppy Joes (using the leftover pork and apples from Wednesday’s dinner)

Dinner

Ham Steak and Pineapple (18 minutes)

My meal plans use a lot of ham. I have recipes that are sweet and others that are savory. It works as a main dish, a sandwich, and even a seasoning.

Friday

Breakfast

Oatmeal and Cinnamon Toast

Lunch

As you can see, sticking to a Weekly Family Meal Plan keeps ME in control of what my family eats—no junk or heavily-processed foods go on my table. I know for a fact that I am serving nutritious foods made with the best ingredients.

Yes, it takes organization and discipline to plan meals a week ahead. But the more time I save in the kitchen, the more time I have to spend with my family.

And THAT is a good Mama Goal.

I remember the frustration of watching my baby kick off their socks for the millionth time in a single day. I needed to keep those toes warm, but how, if the socks were continually falling off or getting kicked into oblivion?

Table could not be displayed.

Instead of buying more and more pairs to add to the disappearing collection, I opted for fleece booties instead. Fleece booties are not quite socks and not quite shoes – but are the perfect solution for babies that hate both (and mamas who are sick of replacing them!). If you’re looking for a similar solution, here are the best available fleece booties to choose from.

What I Love

Very affordable price, compared to most brands

The hook and loop closure will keep the booties on all day

The polyester material is soft and gentle against your baby’s sensitive skin

These fleece booties are perfect for the mama on a budget. The hook fastens at the front of the foot, making the process of dressing your little one as easy as possible.

The non-skid soles on the bottom of the booties offer peace of mind for mamas with walking babies, helping to prevent any accidental slips and falls as they grow into their own two feet.
Mama’s Choice: Best Lux Option

No products found.

What I Love

These booties are incredibly fashionable, perfect for the baby fashionista

Even with the high-quality fleece and suede materials, these are machine-washable

The hook-and-loop closure ensures they stay on the baby’s feet, no matter what

The silicone slip-resistant print provides traction for walking across sleek surfaces

UGG is renowned throughout the world for their footwear, and is one of the world’s most highly favored lifestyle brands. For mothers who want their babies to sit in the lap of luxury, these booties provide a stylish addition to your little one’s attire, so they can stand out from the crowd, even at a young age.

This UGG shoewear features several different materials to provide maximum comfort, protection, and warmth for your baby’s feet. The inside is covered in a soft, fleece lining, perfectly suited to your baby’s sensitive skin. The fleece material extends to the upper portion of the shoe as well, optimizing insulation from every angle.

With these booties, you don’t have to compromise style for security. The UGGs are designed with a suede outsole and silicone slip-resistant print to prevent slips and falls. Babies can enjoy the luxurious look and feel of these booties for special occasions or every day, as long as they are between the ages of 0-12 months.

How to Choose the Best Fleece Booties

Although the cuteness factor is at the forefront of many of our minds as we shop for our little ones’ footwear, it’s not the only thing you need to consider. While the booties should match your baby’s style and attire, they should also fit snugly and comfortably and be conducive to movement and growth.

Newborns and babies that are around three months old and younger will do best with lightweight booties that are designed to do no more than cover the feet. As they age, you can progress to a style with added protection, such as a flexible yet sturdy sole. (This is the point at which you will need to place more emphasis on the booties’ slip-resistant bottom.)

Once your baby has outgrown the more protective pair and is walking more often, consider upgrading to a more structured design. Booties such as the UGG Baby Bixbee Ankle boot are perfect for this, as they fit more like a shoe instead of a more secure sock.

3 Important Factors to Consider When Choosing Fleece Booties

When shopping for fleece booties for your baby, there are a few key things you need to keep an eye out for to ensure they not only fit properly but also that they’ll keep your little one’s feet warm and secure throughout the entire day.

I suggest that you carefully consider the following details when selecting fleece booties for your baby:

Quality of the strap. A weak, faulty strap increases the likelihood that you will lose the booties, and your baby will go barefoot at some point in the day.

Anti-slip sole. This is most important for walking babies and toddlers. You don’t want to take a chance and have them slip on tile or wood flooring, for example.

How the shoe fits. Many booties are known to run either small or large. Although this isn’t exactly a big deal, some mamas might not want a loose fit on their baby’s feet. Others need the shoe to last as long as possible while the little one grows.

Other Fleece Booties You Might Consider

If none of the three choices above suit you and your baby, you might find the perfect pair in the list below.

Hudson Baby Unisex Fleece Booties

No products found.

What I Love

The sheep design is absolutely adorable

The straps completely envelop the foot and fasten at the front for easy closure

The non-skid soles will keep your baby from slipping and falling

The high tops offer greater protection for your baby’s ankles

What’s Meh

Although cute, the lamb’s ears may accidentally trip a baby that is new to walking

These wear out relatively quickly

These darling fleece booties are perfect for the mamas looking for a simple cover-up for their baby’s feet and wish to emphasize aesthetics slightly more than practicality. The lamb design is absolutely perfect for dressing up the baby on special occasions such as Easter, all while keeping the little one’s feet nice and cozy.

The design is highly secure, as the straps wrap around the entirety of your baby’s foot and fasten in front to give you the greatest ease when dressing your baby for the day. Little ones who are just learning to walk will benefit from the non-skid soles; however, keep a close eye on them when they’re up and moving about. The dangling ears may get in the way of their footing.

Unlike many of the designs here, these booties are high-top and offer even more protection and warmth, from the tips of the toes, up to the ankles. This makes them ideal for chilly nights or for wear throughout the winter season when you need a bit of added defense against the low temperatures.

These Hudson booties are the perfect solution for mamas looking to add some charm or a bit of added protection to their baby’s seasonal get-up.

Mybbay Fleece Booties

No products found.

What I Love

The snappable bands wrap around the foot from back to front, preventing any instances of the booties being kicked or pulled off

The bands are stretchy, enabling baby feet of nearly all sizes to fit inside

They come with a 100% lifetime guarantee

What’s Meh

They tend to wear down relatively quickly

These booties are ideal for babies with tons of energy and who tend to kick or pull their booties and socks off. Though they slip on as easily as a pair of slippers, the stretchy bands ensure that they fit snugly on your baby’s foot without risk of coming off for any reason. There is added security in the snapping buttons as well, as opposed to Velcro.

Instead of silicone bottoms, these booties offer even greater defense against slips and falls due to the rubber non-skid spots on the sole. Whether your little one is out and about or just waddling throughout the house, you can be confident in their safety. The Mybbay booties are also some of the warmest foot covers on the market, given the extremely fluffy, densely-packed fleece and polyester.

For maximum warmth and ease when dressing your baby, choose the Mybbay fleece booties for your little one.

Closing Thoughts

Choosing the best fleece baby booties for your little one is a challenging process, I know! There are so many to choose from, and so many features to consider. As long as you pay special attention to the key characteristics listed above (the straps, anti-slip sole, and overall fit), you are sure to find the perfect pair that keep your baby warm and protected, no matter what.
