Have you ever watched Monk? I only ask because it’s one of my favorite shows and as I’m writing this post, I can’t get the theme song out of my head:
…It’s a jungle out there. Poison in the very air we breathe. Do you know what’s in the water that you drink? Well, I do and it’s amazing…
And, while my feelings about our air and water are certainly not as fatalistic as Monk’s, I have a very real concern about the toxins we readily expose ourselves to. That’s why I’ve joined forces with Seventh Generation to become a Toxin Freedom Fighter and stand up for safer chemicals. There are a number of reasons why you should join this initiative, too, and, it’s not just because you’ll get to wear this cool green mask!
What is a Toxin Freedom Fighter?
Here’s the danger: 85,000 synthetic chemicals have been introduced into the market since the Toxic Substances Control Act was passed in 1976. The EPA has required testing on less than 10% of these chemicals.
Read that again: The EPA has required testing on less than 10% of the synthetic chemicals we use on a regular basis. I don’t know how that strikes you, but this mama has no way of being certain that the chemicals I expose my family to are within this 10%. I’ve sorta trusted the EPA to take care of this for me, and the fact that there are so many chemicals that have gone untested scares me. A lot.
But, as with most things that scare me, there is a viable solution. We can join Seventh Generation in the fight and demand that Congress reevaluate the Toxic Substances Control Act for the first time since 1976.
Sign the Petition for Safer Chemicals
Seventh Generation is on a mission to collect 100,000 signatures in favor of safer chemicals. If they reach that goal (and they’re very close), a few key things will happen:
- The Toxin Freedom Fighters will deliver them to Congress on April 30, 2014
- The signatures will strengthen the movement behind chemical reform, and will encourage decision-makers to change the necessary laws
- Seventh Generation will spread awareness about the 37 year-old TSCA and starts conversations about how it fails to protect the health of the general public
I’ve signed and I encourage you to sign and get us one step further toward reforms that will help keep our families safe. There is so much at risk and it takes seconds to throw your name in the pile and speak up for reform that will be beneficial for our health and the environment for years to come. Visit FightToxins.com to sign and then share the petition across all of your social media channels. Let’s help Seventh Generation reach their goal and let Congress know that we need them to act.
